How to Learn Cooking Basics

There are so many different ways to cook so many different things that it would never fit all in one wikihow article, but here you can find a few cooking basics. Anyone can make cereal, and anyone can heat up leftovers in the microwave, but you want to really cook. Problem is, you don't know how. Well it isn't hard to learn, and here is how. Give it a try!

Steps

  1. Find a Source. Start looking for a cooking class you could take, a person that could teach you, a cooking show or a book you could read.
  2. Start Slow. Don't go home the first time and try to make a turkey dinner. Start with something small; cookies or scrambled eggs for example.
  3. Season. Any number of herbs or spices can be used to increase the flavor of whatever you are cooking. These may need to be added before or after cooking, depending on the spice.
  4. Marinade. Before cooking, you can soak whatever you are cooking in a marinade(basically a liquid based seasoning solution). This is optional and not for everyone or every food.
  5. Mix. Past the simple basics there can be combination of ingredients. This can be as simple as mixing multiple spices before seasoning your meat, or adding sauce to your pasta. combining ingredients can help different flavors enhance and complement each other. Sometimes mixing can be all you need to do to cook, such as mixing oil, vinegar, and lettuce to make a salad.
  6. Learn. Explore the internet or your local book store to find more information on cooking. If you get tired of simply heating your food, you can complexly heat your food as you find the difference between roasting, broiling, grilling, boiling, searing and many more different ways of cooking.
  7. Find Recipes. While a recipe is by no means necessary to cooking, you may find that different recipes pique your interest, and you should try them out.

Tips

  • Enjoy a variety of foods. Research how to make the dishes you like and compare them to the ones produced by someone else.
  • While some cooking methods involve raw ingredients and even raw or chemically cooked meats, the simple and safest way to go for beginners would be to use heat to cook.
  • Don't expect to be fully satisfied your first try. cooking is as complex as it is simple, and can take time to get results you like.
  • Enjoy it. Cooking isn't for everyone, and is supposed to be fun, so if you find yourself dreading it, then it probably isn't for you. It also takes patience, common sense, and confidence.
    • If you think it would be more fun to learn with a friend, then do it! Having someone else to go it with you can help a lot!
  • Don't worry if you mess up on a recipe. We all make mistakes in our cooking now and then. You just have to use our good judgement to decide whether or not it's fixable.

Warnings

  • Beware of food allergies and the possible inedible or poisonous properties of different things before trying to cook them.
  • Be safe when heating anything. Anything hot enough to cook your food can be hot enough to hurt you.
