Low Turnout of Voters In Hong Kong PDF Print E-mail

voters

So far, with about a week to go only around six percent have voted. The main reason is apathy. The persons I have spoken to that didn't bother to cast their votes said one of these:

(1). Pare-pareho lang naman ang mga iyan. (The candidates are all the same.)
(2). Next time na lang pag di ako busy. (When I'm not busy.)
(3). Di ko nga alam kung sino ang mga kandidato. (I don't even know who are running!)
(4). Mahal pamasahe. (It's expensive to go.)
(5). Kapag nasa Pilipinas na ako. (I'll vote when I'm back to the Philippines.){/tab}

For those who went, these are what they said:

(1). I just did my part. Even if they cheat or whatever, at least I've done my part.
(2). I have to vote for my candidate!
(3). It's my right, and I want to.

You can't fault the consulate people here in Hong Kong, even the various "political" and "regional" groups have done their part. It's just that most of the Filipinos here don't feel and to some extent understand the significance of this exercise. It's a pity that it is so.
