Midlevel Escalator PDF Print E-mail

Midlevel Escalator

Midlevel Escalator

A great way to explore Hong Kong is by the escalator (or travellator) that links the Midlevels residential area to the centre of the business district in Central. The escalator goes in the downward direction in the morning to bring residents to their workplaces and markets. For the rest of the day, it switches over to the upward direction. Take it, and stop at each level to explore the nooks and corners. Lots of cafes, crafts shops, tiny mom and pop stores, antiques, boutiques, etc.

It is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world and worth a look and a ride.

Escalator Tip: When you are using an escalator, no matter it's inside the MTR station, a shopping mall or a department store, PLEASE STAND ON YOUR RIGHT. As the pace of walking of the locals are quite fast and most locals are always in a hurry, please let the left side of the escalator clear and let them rush. This is particularly important during rush hours in the early morning.

Minibuses PDF Print E-mail

HK Mini BusMinibuses

There are two type of minibus in Hong Kong. Both are cream colored but some have red roofs and others have green roofs. Green minibuses provide scheduled services with fixed routes, fares, vehicle allocation and timetables: red minibuses operate with flexible routes, fares and timetables.

Fares are paid on a green minibus when you get on board. Some green minibuses accept payment by Octopus, but for those that dont, always have correct amount in coins with you. On most red minibuses, you pay when you get off. Make sure you have the exact fare in case the driver runs out of change.

Advise: To halth either a  green or red minibus so you can alight, do it like a local and say "yau lok" which means "stop please" in Cantonese. If you want to commend a public light bus driver, or if you are not satisfied with the service, get the license number and call the transport complaint hotline on 2889-9999.

Tip: Take Minibus no. 1 from Central (Hong Kong station bus terminus, in between IFC 2 and the Four Seasons Hotel) to The Peak. It's the cheapest way to get there from Central, usually faster than the regular bus, as exciting... and very local!
